Brief Bio

Robert Service was born in Lancashire, England on 16 January 1874, to Scottish parents. When Robert was five years old, he went to live with relatives in Scotland and composed his first piece of poetry at the age of six. In 1883, his family joined him in Scotland.

Robert attended the University of Glasgow and studied English language and litterature, subjects in which he excelled. While growing up, Robert studied litterary masters, such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, Tennyson, and Browning. In 1894, he immigrated to Canada and, following in his father's footsteps, accepted a position at the Canadian Bank of Commerce stationed at Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory.

In 1908, Robert moved north to Dawson City, where he published his first, and perhaps most famous work, Songs of a Sourdough.

During the First World War, Robert served as war correspondent and eventually settled in France. It was there that he met Germaine Bougeoin, a young French woman whom he later married. Robert returned to Canada during WWII where he completed several more publications, including Ploughman of the Moon and Harper of Heaven.

When the war ended, he, his wife, and their daughter returned to France where he lived for the remainder of his life.
